Point of Hopes & Dreams
Two fantasy novels by Melissa Scott & Lisa A Barnett reviewed by Liz Nicholson

This delightful pair of books follows the developing relationship between a law officer and an ex-mercenary in a world where magic works and horoscopes are an important part of life.

Each title concerns a case of overwhelming national importance in which the men must work together to solve and prevent crime despite their very different social philosophies. Their friendship grows into a diffident love and the reader is left wanting more.

Unfortunately one of the authors died and the other feels unable to continue the planned series alone. With this drawback in mind I would still recommend the books with their slow and gentle discovery of feelings and possibilities. The fact that the series is unfinished allows the reader to imagine and dream. Excellent writing and memorable characters make the books enjoyable and I can assure you that the crimes are not left unsolved or unpunished.

If you are looking for erotic sex, don't bother, but if you want a basis for imagining a long life filled with love, read, and enjoy.

Liz Nicholson is a retired English teacher with a strong interest in writing; mainly fantasy, erotic fiction and poetry. She is married with a grown-up daughter who also writes. Liz lives in a country house in Portugal. When not reading or writing Liz enjoys travel, history, music and art. She originally trained as a lawyer and a strong desire for equality and justice led to a lifelong involvement in anti-racism, immigration issues, feminism and gay rights. Whilst these beliefs colour her own work she is just as likely to enjoy others’ apolitical writing.
